DR KRISTLEE FERNANDES

GDC No. 245731

Kris graduated from Goa Dental College in 2002 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and a Masters of Dental Science in Endodontics.

Dr Fernandes has had several publications in international journals and is one of the inventors of a medicament for failed root canal treatments.

What is root canal treatment?

Inside of each of your teeth is a pulp chamber containing blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue that help the roots of your teeth grow during development. When the pulp in this chamber becomes infected (known as an abscessed tooth) it becomes necessary to remove the infection in order to prevent tooth loss and other potentially serious consequences.

The procedure to remove the infection is known as root canal treatment or root canal therapy. Treatment is safe and effective with a high success rate. It is also a quicker way to preserve the quality and appearance of your smile.

Symptoms that indicate a root canal treatment may be necessary include:

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is likely that you have an abscessed tooth. Left untreated, the infection can spread to the jaw and throughout the face resulting in systemic infection. An untreated tooth abscess can also result in tooth loss, necessitating advanced dental treatments to restore and preserve the quality and function of the smile.

The root canal procedure

To perform a root canal treatment, a small access hole will first need to be made. This will enable us to remove the debris and infection. Once removed and thoroughly cleaned, the pulp chamber is filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha. If necessary, antibiotics may be injected into the tooth as well but this is not needed for every root canal procedure.

Once the tooth is fully sealed, a dental crown will be made and placed over the tooth to prevent further damage. Your new dental crown will be carefully shaped, coloured and sized to blend perfectly into your existing smile, working to protect the weakened tooth without compromising aesthetics.

Root canal treatment FAQs

While conventional knowledge holds that a root canal treatment is unpleasant, the treatment is no more uncomfortable than having treatment for a traditional filling. Far from causing pain, root canal treatments relieve pain and prevent future discomforts as well.

If you are nervous about having the root canal procedure, we would be happy to discuss sedation options during your treatment consultation.

In most cases after root canal treatment, there will be swelling and numbness around the previously infected area. Depending on the severity of each case, our Endodontist may prescribe medicine to help relieve any ongoing pain which should fade after 24 to 48 hours.

After a root canal, try to eat soft foods that require little chewing, like yogurts, eggs, and fish. Avoid hot or hard foods that might hurt your teeth. Sorriso Design dentists will suggest you to not eat for a few hours until the numbness in your mouth wears off so you don’t bite your cheek or tongue.
