Restoring a decayed tooth

For patients struggling with fillings that are not sufficiently providing adequate protection, or if a tooth is at advance stages of decay, dental inlays or onlays may be the solution you are looking for.

They offer a discreet and permanent alternative to the unsightly metal dental work of the past. With their sleek design and same-day placement, inlays and onlays are an increasingly popular treatment to many common restoration problems.

Some fillings, such as composite and traditional fillings, can shrink with time but inlays and onlays don’t shrink and are also extremely durable and stable.

Dental inlays and onlays are useful because they preserve as much of as your natural tooth as possible. This makes cleaning your teeth easier.

The benefits of dental inlays and onlays are:

Why are inlays and onlays better than a dental filling for large dental caries?

It can be much more difficult to fix a filling safely in a broad cavity and a simple filling would be unable to protect the undamaged surface of the tooth. Where the edge of a filling and the natural tooth meet, an injury may occur leading to secondary tooth decay.

In the case of extended dental caries, the area beneath the gum can also be damaged which makes it almost impossible to create a tooth filling that is secure and safe. This may also lead to secondary tooth decay too.

This is when we would recommend a dental inlay or onlay to repair the affect tooth.

Dental inlays and onlays FAQs

Dental inlays are used to fill cavities between the cusps of a tooth. If the cavity is too large for a filling then our dentist may recommend a dental inlay to help build up and protect the biting surface of the tooth.

A dental onlay is used to repair the outer surface of the tooth such as covering one or more of the cusps outside of the inner biting surface of the tooth.

Treating a tooth that requires a dental inlay or onlay usually takes place over two visits to our Milton Keynes dental clinic.

At your first appointment, the affected tooth will need initial preparation and an impression made. The impression is then sent to a laboratory where your inlay or onlay is custom-made by an highly skilled dental technician.

When ready for fitting, we will book a second appointment with you to carefully place and bond the inlay or onlay securely in position before finally cleaning and polishing for a perfect finish.

Dental inlays and onlays are usually made from a composite or ceramic material as these offer great hard wearing and aesthetically pleasing qualities.

Often referred to as partial crowns due to their extreme durability, inlays and onlays also look natural and can function perfectly for a long period of time. They will protect an affected tooth and provide the strength required for everyday chewing.
